The New York Mets beat the Washington Nationals 3-1 this afternoon to split their two game series and improved their record to 5-8 on the season. In the top of the first inning, the offense got on the board early after LF Brandon Nimmo walked to lead off the game, two batters later 1B Pete Alonso singled to move Nimmo to third base and and DH Dom Smith drove in Nimmo with a sacrifice fly. In the top of the fourth inning, 3B J.D. Davis and SS Andres Giminez singled to lead off the inning and two batters later, 2B Luis Guillorme came through with an RBI single to bring in Davis. Nimmo led the top of the seventh with another walk and then Alonso singled to bring Nimmo to third base. Smith followed at the plate and came through with an RBI double.
RHP Rick Porcello had his best outing of the season allowing one run on five hits in seven innings. He gave up no walks and had four strikeouts. Porcello picked up his first win. RHP Seth Lugo followed and closed it out with two perfect innings in the bottom of the eighth and ninth innings and picked up his second save.
The Mets are off tomorrow and return to action at home on Friday, August 7 against the Miami Marlins at 7:10 p.m.
