The New York Mets beat the Washington Nationals 11-6 tonight and improved their record to 8-11 on the season. In the bottom of the first inning, the offense rallied after they fell behind 3-0 with a lead-off homer by CF Brandon Nimmo, and then two outs RF Michael Conforto was hit by a pitch. 1B Pete Alonso followed with a two-run double and then DH Dom Smith came through with an RBI double of his own to tie the game. SS rookie Andres Giminez's hot start continued with an RBI single, his first RBI with a runner in scoring position. After a scoreless bottom of the second inning, in the bottom of the third inning, Alonso and Smith both walked and catcher Wilson Ramos came through with an RBI single. In the bottom of the sixth inning, 2B Luis Guillorme led off with a walk and then Nimmo followed with a well executed bunt single down the left field line.  Later on in the inning, Conforto hit a two-run double and then Alonso broke the game open with a two-run homer and Smith followed with a solo homer. It was the first time the team has hit back-to-back homers this year. In the bottom of the eighth, Conforto singled and Alonso hit a ground-rule double. Smith drove in Conforto with a RBI ground-out.

RHP Robert Gsellman made his first start of the season after he was out with triceps tendinitis and first start since 2017. Gsellman got into immediate trouble in the top of the first inning after he gave up a lead-off double to SS Trea Turner and a walk to CF Adam Eaton. Two batters later, Gsellman gave up a three-run homer to LF Juan Soto. He threw a scoreless top of the second and was taken out after the inning after manager Luis Rojas said he would be on a limited pitch count. His final line was 2 innings, 4 hits, 3 runs, 0 walks and 1 strikeouts. LHP Chasen Shrieve followed with a scoreless top of the third inning. RHP Jeurys Familia came in next and threw two scoreless innings in the top of the fourth and fifth innings. Familia picked up his first win of the season. LHP Justin Wilson followed in the top of the sixth and gave up a solo homer to Soto, but then retired the next batters he faced. RHP Dellin Betances threw a scoreless top of the seventh inning and struck out the side. RHP Drew Smith gave up a one-out solo homer to 2B Starlin Castro in the top of the eighth, but didn't allow any more runs after that. RHP Brad Brach gave up a solo homer to catcher Kurt Suzuki with one out in the top of the ninth, but was able to get the next outs to end the game.

The Mets next game is tomorrow afternoon at home against the Nationals at 1:10 p.m.
