RHP Luis Severino had a scoreless bottom of the first, but then gave up an unearned run in the bottom of the second after CF Harrison Bader overthrew SS Francisco Lindor and then Severino was not backing up, which caused the ball to head throw 3B Mark Vientos.
Vientos then tried the catch the ball, but it slipped out of his hand and fell into a hole in the dugout to allow a run to score.
Severino was let down by his defense once again in the bottom of the fourth after RF Tyrone Taylor bobbled the exchange off a double by catcher Elias Diaz which allowed the tying run to score.
Severino then gave up a two-run homer to the following hitter RF Jake Cave.
In the bottom of the fifth, Severino's struggles continued after he gave up a RBI double to 2B Brendan Rodgers and was taken out after the inning.
His final line was five innings, eight hits, five runs, 0 walks and five strikeouts.
RHP Huascar Brazoban followed with two scoreless innings in the bottom of the sixth and seventh.
LHP Alex Young came on in the bottom of the eighth and gave up a RBI single to Diaz.
CF Harrison Bader drove in the Mets first two runs in the top of the second on a two-run single.
The only other run driven in was by LF Brandon Nimmo on a RBI single in the top of the fifth.
The Met offense wasted several opportunities and were unable to come up with timely hits to tie the game and take the lead.
They went 2-7 with runners in scoring position leaving six runners on base.
The Mets next game is tomorrow night, Wednesday, August 7 at the Rockies at 8:40 p.m.
