Mets Beat Angels 5-1 Powered By Alonso

The New York Mets beat the Los Angeles 5-1 tonight at Angel Stadium and improved their record to 58-51.

After a scoreless top of the first, 2B Jose Iglesias doubled to lead off the top of the second and two batters later, catcher Francisco Alvarez drove in Iglesias with a RBI single.

In the top of the third, LF Brandon Nimmo singled to lead off the inning and stole second.

Two batters later, 1B Pete Alonso delivered with a two-run homer.

In the top of the fifth, CF Harrison Bader led off with a single and SS Francisco Lindor followed by reaching on a bunt single.

Two batters later, D.H. J.D. Martinez drove in Bader with a RBI single.

Later in the inning, Lindor scored on an error by SS Zach Neto.

RHP Paul Blackburn made his Met debut and was able to get out of a jam in the bottom of the first with a double play.

Blackburn was helped out his defense in the bottom of the second after Alvarez threw out a base-runner caught stealing second.

In the bottom of the fourth, Blackburn was able to escape out of another jam with runners on first and second with one out by picking up a strike-out and ground-out.

Blackburn settled down after that with scoreless innings in the bottom of the fifth and sixth and was then taken out.

His final line was six innings, one run, two walks and six strikeouts.

He picked up his fifth win and lowered his ERA to 4.11.

RHP Jose Butto followed and continued his dominant stretch in the bullpen with two perfect innings in the bottom of the seventh and eighth innings.

Butto had three strikeouts with no hits and no walks and lowered his ERA to 2.38.

RHP Phil Maton closed it out with a scoreless bottom of the ninth.

The Mets next game is tomorrow night, Saturday, August 4 at the Angels at 9:35 p.m.
