RHP Luis Severino started out well with a scoreless bottom of the first, but then gave up a RBI single to former Met 2B Luis Guillorme in the bottom of the second.
Severino's struggles continued gave up a two-run homer to DH Joc Pederson in the bottom of the third and a solo homer to RF Corbin Carroll in the bottom of the fourth and was taken out with two outs in the bottom of the fifth.
His final line was 4.2 innings, eight hits, four runs, one walk and nine strikeouts.
RHP Huascar Brazoban came in next and picked up two outs.
LHP Danny Young followed and also picked up two outs.
RHP Reed Garrett came on and got the last two outs in the bottom of the seventh.
RHP Phil Maton appeared next and picked up the first two outs in the bottom of the eighth and was taken out with two outs and a man on first in the inning.
RHP Edwin Diaz came on and had a complete meltdown walking pinch-hitter Pavin Smith and SS Gelardo Perdamo and then allowing the game-winning grand slam to Carrol on a hanging slider.
The Met offense was held scoreless for the first four innings against LHP Eduardo Rodriguez, but then came alive in the top of the fifth.
LF Brandon Nimmo led off with a walk and two batters later, DH J.D. Martinez drove in Nimmo with a RBI double.
Two batters later, catcher Francisco Alvarez drove in Martinez with a RBI single and CF Harrison Bader followed with a two-run homer.
In the top of the sixth, RF Starling Marte led off with a bunt single and then stole second.
Two batters later, 1B Pete Alonso drove in Marte with a sacrifice fly.
The Mets next game is tomorrow afternoon, Thursday, August 29 at the Diamondbacks at 3:40 p.m.
