Mets Beat Diamondbacks 8-3 Behind Fifth-Inning Barrage

The New York Mets beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 8-3 tonight at Chase Field and improved their record to 69-63.

After a scoreless top of the first, 1B Pete Alonso led off with a homer in the top of the second and two batters later, D.H. J.D. Martinez walked.

CF Tyrone Taylor then grounded into a fielder's choice and 2B Kevin Newman made an error which allowed Martinez to reach third.

2B Jeff McNeil followed with a RBI ground-out.

After scoreless innings in the top of the third and fourth, the Met broke the game open in the top of the fifth.

McNeil led off with a double and catcher Francisco Alvarez followed with a RBI single.

SS Francisco Lindor then singled and 3B Mark Vientos followed by driving in Alvarez with a RBI single.

LF Brandon Nimmo followed with a single to load the bases and two batters later, RF Jesse Winker drove in Lindor with a sacrifice fly.

Martinez then reached on an infield hit to load the bases and Taylor followed with a hit by pitch to bring in a run.

McNeil followed with a based loaded walk and then Martinez scored on an error by SS Geraldo Perdamo.

LHP Sean Manaea was spectacular through the first six innings with no runs and 11 strikeouts, but then ran out of gas in the bottom of the seventh.

Manaea gave up a solo homer to LF Lourdes Guerriel Jr and then later in the inning a two-run homer to RF Corbin Carroll and was taken out with two outs in the inning.

His final line was 6.2 innings, four hits, three runs, 0 walks and 11 strikeouts.

He picked up his 10th win.

RHP Reed Garrett followed and got the last out in the bottom of the seventh.

RHP Phil Maton came in next and picked up the first two outs in the bottom of the eighth and LHP Danny Young had to come in to get the last out in the eighth.

RHP Adam Ottavino closed it out with a 1-2-3 bottom of the ninth.

The Mets next game is tomorrow night, Wednesday, August 28 at the Diamondbacks at 9:40 p.m.
