The New York Mets beat the Baltimore Orioles 4-3 tonight at Citi Field and improved their record to 65-50.
The Met offense got off to a fast start in the bottom of the first after 3B Mark Vientos singled with one out and then D.H. J.D. Martinez followed with a two-run homer.
In the bottom of the fourth, 1B Pete Alonso led off with a double and then D.H. Starling Marte bunted to move Alonso over to third base.
Two batters later, catcher Francisco Alvarez walked and then LF Tyrone Taylor drove in Alonso with a RBI single.
The offense did not do much after that until the bottom of the ninth after catcher Francisco Alvarez came up with one out and delivered a towering walk-off homer to left-center field on a 3-0 count.
LHP David Peterson cruised through the first four innings and then ran into trouble in the top of the fifth.
Peterson gave up a one-out double to 3B Ramon Urias and then allowed Urias to advance to third base on a poor throw due to a pick-off attempt at second base.
Peterson then gave up a RBI ground-out to 2B Jackson Holliday.
Peterson had a scoreless top of the sixth and gave up a lead-off double to 1B Ryan Mountcastle and then retired the two hitters on a ground-out and strike-out.
Peterson then balked in a run which allowed Mountcastle to score and gave up the game-tying homer to Urias on a hanging slider.
Peterson was taken out after the inning and his final line was seven innings, six hits, three runs (two earned runs), one walk and eight strikeouts.
RHP Jose Butto followed in the top of the eighth and continued his dominance in the bullpen with another scoreless inning.
RHP Edwin Diaz threw a 1-2-3 top of the ninth inning with a strikeout and picked up his fourth win.
The Mets next game is tomorrow night, Tuesday, August 20 at home against the Orioles at 7:10 p.m.
