The New York Mets defeated the Miami Marlins 4-2 this afternoon to take two out of three games in the series and improved their record to 7-9. The offense was held scoreless for the first two innings until the bottom of the third after rookie 2B Andres Giminez continued his hot start with a lead-off single and then stole second, his third stolen base of the year. Catcher Tomas Nido and centefielder Brandon Nimmo followed with walks to load the bases. LF Jeff McNeil drove in the first run of the game with an RBI ground-out. 1B Pete Alonso struck out, but RF Michael Conforto came through with a bloop single to RF to score Nido. In the bottom of the fourth inning, Giminez hit a double, the first of his big league career and came around to score on a RBI single by Nimmo. In the bottom of the sixth, Giminez lead off with his third hit of the day on a well executed drag bunt down the first-base line. Nido then singled and Nimmo was hit by a pitch to load the bases once again for McNeil. McNeil hit a shallow fly ball to centerfield, but it was deep enough to score Giminez.
RHP Jacob deGrom wasn't at his best and struggled with his command due to a blister on his right middle finger, but still found a way to go five innings only allowing a two-run homer to 1B Jesus Aguilar in the top of the fifth. deGrom has shown that he can battle through not having his best stuff and be able to get hitters out. It's one of the reasons why he is arguably the best pitcher in baseball. His final line was 5 innings, 7 hits, 2 runs, 2 walks and 6 strikeouts. He picked up his second win of the year.
RHP Jared Hughes came in next and was able to work around a single by 2B Eddie Alvarez and struck out DH Jonathan Villar to end the inning.
RHP Dellin Betances gave up a lead-off walk to SS Jon Berdi, but then got CF Corey Dickerson to fly out and then got Aguilar to ground into a 5-4-3 double play to end the inning in the top of the seventh.
RHP Edwin Diaz stuck out 3B Brian Anderson and RF Matt Joyce to start the top of the eighth inning, but then gave up a single to catcher Ryan Lavarnway and a double to Alvarez. Diaz was able to rebound and get out of the inning after he struck out CF Monte Harrison to end the inning.
RHP Seth Lugo came in the top of the ninth and struck out Villar and walked Berdi, but was able to get Dickerson to ground into a double play to end the game. Lugo picked up his third save of the year.
The Mets next game is tomorrow night at home against the Washington Nationals at 7:10 p.m.
