The New York Mets defeated the Miami Marlins 7-2 this afternoon for their sixth consecutive win and 13 out of last 14 and improved their record to 59-56. 1B Pete Alonso got the offense on the board quickly with a two-run homer in the bottom of the first inning. CF Michael Conforto also hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the third. In the bottom of the seventh, LF Aaron Athleer doubled with one out and then RF Jeff McNeil hit a two-run homer. Two batters, Conforto hit a solo homer, his second of the game.

LHP Steven Matz bounced back after his last rough outing against the Pirates and only gave up a RBI single to CF Lewis Brinson in the top of the second and a solo homer to RF Brian Anderson in the top of the sixth. Matz was helped out by his infield defense after he was able to induce double plays in the top of the first and fourth innings. His final line was 6.2 innings, 7 hits, 2 runs, 2 walks and seven strikeouts. He picked up his seventh win. LHP Justin Wilson had to come in the top of the seventh with two outs and gave up a single to pinch-hitter Martin Prado, but struck out SS Jon Berdi to end the inning. RHP Jeurys Familia came in next and threw a scoreless top of the eighth inning. LHP Luis Avilan closed it out with a scoreless top of the ninth inning.

The Mets are off tomorrow and return to action on Friday, August 9th at home against the Washington Nationals at 7:10 p.m.
