The New York Mets announced today that they have signed free agent and former San Francisco Giants second baseman Joe Panik to a major league contract for the rest of the year. Infielder Adeiny Hechavarria has been designated for assignment to make room for Panik on the 40-man roster. Panik has struggled this year hitting .235 with 17 doubles, a triple, three homers and 17 RBI's. but the former St. John's star and New York native was an All-Star in 2015, Gold Glove winner in 2016 and won a World Series in 2014. He is a lifetime .271 hitter and will help improve the infield defense as well as a clutch hitter who knows how to win and fill in for Robinson Cano at 2B after his injury and help bolster the bench for the stretch run.
