The New York Mets defeated the Cleveland Indians 8-2 tonight for their third consecutive win and improved their record to 65-60. In the bottom of the second inning, catcher Wilson Ramos singled and LF J.D. Davis followed with a two-run homer. In the bottom of the fourth inning, 2B Joe Panik reached on an error after Indians LF Oscar Mercado dropped a routine fly ball, which allowed Panik to reach second base and RF Michael Conforto then came through with a two-run homer. In the bottom of the seventh inning, 3B Todd Frazier led off with a single, CF Juan Lagares walked, pinch-hitter Raja Davis bunted into a fielder's choice, but SS Amed Rosario hit a RBI single. Panik followed with a RBI single and 1B Pete Alonso came up and broke the game open with a two-run double. In the bottom of the eighth, Lagares walked and Davis hit a RBI double.
LHP Steven Matz had another solid start allowing two runs on five hits in 6 1/3 innings. Matz had seven strikeouts and gave up two walks. Matz picked up his eighth win and is now 6-0 at home. LHP Justin Wilson had to come in the top of the seventh inning with runners on first and second and one out and got out of the jam with two king-sized strikeouts of SS Francisco Lindor and Mercado. LHP Luis Avilan followed with a scoreless top of the eighth inning. RHP Paul Sewald closed it out with a scoreless top of the ninth inning.
The Mets next game is tomorrow night at home against the Indians at 7:10 p.m.
