Mets vs. Nationals Game 118 Recap

The New York Mets lost to the Washington Nationals 7-4 today to snap their eight-game winning streak and dropped their record to 61-57. RHP Jacob deGrom had a difficult top of the first inning and struggled with command of his fastball and allowed singles to SS Trea Turner and 3B Anthony Rendon and walked RF Juan Soto to load the bases. deGrom got former Met 2B Asdrubal Cabrera to hit a ground-ball to 1B Pete Alonso with two outs, but Alonso made a poor throw to deGrom covering first, and then catcher Wilson Ramos dropped the ball at home plate trying to make the third out. which lead to three unearned runs for DeGrom. All three runs were charged to Alonso's error. deGom settled down after that with scoreless innings in the top of the second, third, fourth and fifth innings and was taken out after the top of the fifth. His final line was five innings, four hits, three runs (zero earned) one walk and seven strikeouts. LHP Luis Avilan came in next in the top of the sixth and gave up singles to Cabrera and catcher Kurt Suzuki to put runners on the corners with two outs and was then taken out. RHP Brad Bach came in for his team debut and was able to get out of the inning. RHP Robert Gsellman followed and gave up one-out singles to RF Adam Eaton and 2B Anthony Rendon and a two-run double to Cabrera. LHP Justin Wilson threw a scoreless top of the eighth inning and struck out the side on 13 pitches. RHP Edwin Diaz came on in the top of the ninth and walked RF Adam Eaton with two outs and then allowed a two-run homer to CF Victor Robles.

The offense was held scoreless in the bottom of the first inning, but in the bottom of the second inning, LF J.D. Davis and catcher Wilson Ramos singled. 2B Joe Panik hit a RBI single and deGrom followed with a bunt single to load the bases. RF Jeff McNeil came up and next and hit a two-run double on the first pitch against Nationals starter RHP Annibal Sanchez to tie the game. The bats went quiet until the bottom of the seventh inning after McNeil led off with a double and SS Amed Rosario singled. CF Michael Conforto hit a sacrifice fly to bring in McNeil. They weren't able to put up any more runs after that and struggled with runners in scoring position leaving 16 men on base.

The Mets are off tomorrow and return to action on Tuesday, August 13th at the Atlanta Braves at 7:20 p.m.
