Mets vs. Padres Game 26 Recap

The New York Mets defeated the San Diego Padres 14-2 today to take two out of three games in the series and improve their record to 17-9. RF Jay Bruce helped get on the board early with an RBI single in the top of the first inning. Catcher Tomas Nido hit a RBI single following a single and stolen base by SS Jose Reyes. In the top of the first inning, 1B Adrian Gonzalez hit a two-run double. In the top of the seventh inning, the Mets broke the game open with five runs. Gonzalez hit a three-run homer and 2B Asdrubal Cabrera hit a two-run single. In the top of the eighth inning, the offense kept the pedal to the metal with five more runs. 3B Todd Frazier homer and SS Jose Reyes hit a solo homer two batters later. CF Michael Conforto and LF Brandon Nimmo added RBI singles later in the inning. Every hitter in the lineup reached base twice. This was the highest run total that the Mets have put up all season.

RHP Zack Wheeler had a difficult bottom of the first inning throwing 30 pitches, but managed to not allow any runs. Wheeler settled down after that was able to pitch five innings. His final line was: 5 IP, 6 hits, 2 earned runs, 2 walks and 9 strikeouts. He picked up his second win. RHP Paul Sewald followed with two scoreless innings in the bottom of the sixth and seventh innings RHP Robert Gsellman came in next and pitched a scoreless bottom of the eighth inning. RHP Matt Harvey closed it out with a scoreless bottom of the ninth inning.

Injury News

LF Yoenis Cespedes left the game in the top of the third inning with a sore left thumb after he stole third base.

The Mets have a day off tomorrow and return to action on Tuesday, May 1st against the Atlanta Braves at 7:10 P.M.
