Mets vs. Nationals Game 16 Recap

Mets RHP Zack Wheeler


The New York Mets lost to the Washington Nationals 5-2 tonight for their second consecutive loss and dropped their record to 12-4. RHP Zack Wheeler made his second start of the season and got out of trouble in the first inning after getting LF Moises Sierra to ground into a double play. Wheeler had a 1-2-3 top of the second inning, but gave up a run in the top of the third inning on a sacrifice fly by RF Bryce Harper. In the top of the fourth inning, he gave up a couple of bloop hits and two RBI singles to  3B Wilmer Difo and catcher Pedro Severino. Wheeler finished up strong with scoreless innings in the top of the fifth and sixth. His final line was six innings pitched with three runs on seven hits with three walks and two strikeouts. RHP Robert Gellman came in next in the top of the seventh and gave up an RBI single to 1B Ryan Zimmmerman. In the top of the eighth, Gsellman gave up another run on a sacrifice fly by Severino. Rookie RHP Gerson Bautista made his MLB debut in the top of the ninth inning and pitched a scoreless inning and had one strikeout after he struck out Ryan Zimmerman on a 97 mph fastball.

The offense struggled all night with men on base and were 0-9 with runners in scoring position. 2B Asdrubal Cabrera drove in the first run of the game with an RBI ground-out in the bottom of the fifth inning. LF Yoenis Cespedes followed with an RBI groundout.

The Mets final game against the Nationals is tomorrow night at 7:10 P.M.
