Mets vs. Nationals Game 8 Recap

Mets LF Yoenis Cespedes


The New York Mets defeated the Washington Nationals 6-5  last night in 12 innings to sweep their three-game series and improve their record to 7-1.  1B Adrian Gonzalez drove in the first four runs with a grand slam for his first homer this year. 2B Asdrubal Cabrera hit a solo homer in the top of the fifth inning. The Met offense went scoreless for the next six innings, but finally broke through in the top of the twelfth inning after LF Yoenis Cespedes drove in the go-ahead run on an RBI single.

RHP Matt Harvey got off to a rough start in the bottom of the first inning after he gave up a two-run homer to RF Bryce Harper. Harvey settled down for the next two innings, but ran into trouble again in the bottom of the fourth inning. He gave up a RBI single to catcher Pedro Severino and another RBI single to SS Trea Turner in the bottom of the fifth inning. Harvey ended up allowing four runs on nine hits and a walk with five strikeouts in five innings. RHP Robert Gsellman came in next and pitched a scoreless bottom of the sixth inning, but came back out for the bottom of the seventh inning and gave up the tying run to CF Michael Taylor. RHP A.J. Ramos followed and got the first two outs in the bottom of the eighth and LHP Jerry Blevins had to come in and get the last out of the inning after he picked up 2B Anthony Rendon. RHP Seth Lugo came in next and had three scoreless innings. and picked up his first win. RHP Jacob Rhyme pitched a scoreless bottom of the twelfth inning and recorded his first save on the season.
