RHP Zack Wheeler
|
The New York Mets defeated the Miami Marlins 4-1 tonight for their eight consecutive win and improved their record to 10-1. RHP Zack Wheeler made his season debut and had an outstanding first start. Wheeler got off to a rough start in the bottom of the first inning after he gave up a homer to SS Miguel Rojas, but settled down after that. He retired 18-19 out of the last batters he faced, including 16 in a row at one point. His fastball stayed at 94-96 mph and topped out at 97 mph. Wheeler's final line was one run on two hits in seven innings and threw only 83 pitches and picked up his first win. He allowed one walk and had seven strikeouts. With this performance, he has probably earned another start. RHP Robert Gsellman came in next and dominated the bottom of the eighth inning, striking out the side. Gsellman has struck out 12 out of the 27 batters he has faced this season. LHP Jerry Blevins began the bottom of the ninth inning and retired LF Derek Dietrick for the first out. RHP A.J. Ramos followed and after allowing a walk, got 2B Starlin Castro to ground into a double play to end the game.
The Mets offense struggled against Marlins starter LHP Jarlin Garcia and was held hitless for the first six innings. 3B Todd Frazier broke up the no-hitter with a single in the top of the seventh. In the top of the eighth inning, the bats finally woke up. Catcher Kevin Plawecki reached first base after being hit by a pitch on the hand and had to come out of the game. Pinch hitter OF Michael Conforto followed with a double. Pinch-hitter 1B Adrian Gonzalez drove in Plawecki and Conforto with a two-run single. 2B Asdrubal Cabrera next reached first 2B after Castro made an error. 1B Wilmer Flores drove in a run with a ground-rule double and then LF Yoenis Cespedes walked. 3B Todd Frazier drove in another run with a sacrifice fly.
The Mets next game is Friday night against the Milwaukee Brewers at 7:10 P.M and they return home to Citi Field.
