Mets vs. Cardinals Game 22 Recap

LHP Steven Matz
The New York Mets lost to the St. Louis Cardinals 9-1 tonight and dropped their record to 15-7. LHP Steven Matz started out well with two scoreless innings, but had a difficult time in the bottom of the third inning. Matz gave up a hit to 2B Kolten Wong and then made a throwing error. He gave up then a sac fly to CF Dexter Fowler and a two-run single to LF Marcel Ozuna for a total of thee unearned runs. In the bottom of the fourth inning, Matz gave up four more runs (three earned). He was hurt by his defense as well, which caused him to throw more pitches and give the Cardinals extra outs. His final line was seven runs (three earned), five hits, and two walks with three strikeouts in 3 1/3 innings. RHP Corey Oswalt came in next after Matz was taken in his Major League debut with the based loaded and one out in the bottom of the fourth inning. Oswalt gave up a two-run homer to 2B 3B Jed Gyorko, but settled down after that and did not allow another runner to reach base. He ended up giving just those two runs in 4 2/3 innings and gave the rest of the bullpen a much needed rest.

RF Jay Bruce drove in the only run of the game with an RBI single in the top of the third inning. The offense had several opportunities to score, but couldn't capitalize with runners in scoring position after having eight baserunners.

The Mets next game is tomorrow afternoon against the Cardinals at 1:15 P.M. in the final game of the series.
