Mets vs. Cardinals Game 21 Recap

RF Jay Bruce


The New York Mets defeated the St. Louis Cardinals 6-5 last night in 10 innings and improved their record to 15-6. The offense rallied back after trailing 2-0 in the bottom of the first inning and scored on a run in the top of the second after RF Jay Bruce hit a RBI triple. In the top of the fifth inning, LF Yoenis Cespedes tied the game at 4-4 with a three-run homer. In the top of the eighth inning, 1B Adrian Gonzalez drove in a run with a sacrifice fly to tie the game at 5. In the top of the tenth inning, Bruce drove in the go-ahead run  with a solo homer for his third hit on the night.

RHP Zack Wheeler got off to a difficult start in the bottom of the first inning after he gave up a two-run homer to CF Tommy Phan. Wheeler settled down with two scoreless innings, but gave up two more runs in the bottom of the fourth after he gave up a RBI double to 2B Kolten Wong and a RBI single to Cardinals starter RHP Luke Weaver and was taken out after the inning for a pinch hitter. His final line was: four innings, six hits, four runs, two walks, and three strikeouts. RHP Matt Harvey came in next for his relief outing of the season and gave up a run after he allowed a RBI double to SS Paul DeJong. Harvey came back out for the bottom of the sixth and pitched a scoreless inning. RHP Paul Sewald followed with two scoreless innings in the bottom of the seventh and eighth innings. RHP Robert Gsellman pitched a scoreless bottom of the ninth inning and picked up his third win. RHP Jeurys Familia pitched 1-2-3 bottom of the tenth inning and recorded his ninth save on the season.

The Mets next game is tonight at 8:15 P.M. against the Cardinals.
