Mets LHP Steven Matz |
The New York Mets defeated the Washington Nationals 3-2 this afternoon and improved their record to 6-1 on the season. LHP Steven Matz bounced back after a rough first start giving up one unearned run in five innings and wound up with a no-decison. He give up three hits and two walks. Matz had eight strikeouts and featured more of his curveball and changeup which made up 54 % of his pitch count. This is a great sign going forward that Matz had the confidence to mix it all his pitches which helped him accumulate strikeouts and groundouts. Hopefully Matz can continue to feature his off-speed stuff which helps compliment his fastball of 93-94 mph. After Matz was taken out, RHP Hansel Robles gave up a homer to RF Bryce Harper in the bottom of the sixth, but settled down after that and didn't give up any more runs. Robes picked up his first win of the season. RHP A.J. Ramos came in next and pitched a scoreless bottom of the seventh inning. RHP Jacob Rhyme retired his only batter in the bottom of the eighth inning and was then pulled for LHP Jerry Blevins. Blevins walked RF Bryce Harper and then RHP Jeurys Familia came in. Familia retired 1B Ryan Zimmerman 2B Howie Kendrick to end the eighth and then pitched a perfect bottom of the ninth for a five out save, his fourth on the season.
The offense was held scoreless against Nationals starter LHP Gio Gonzalez for the first five innings, but broke through in the top of the sixth. Catcher Travis d'Arnaud drove in the first run of the game with an RBI single. 2B Asdrubal Cabrera drove in the tying run with an RBI double in the top of the seventh inning. 3B Todd Frazier drove in the go-ahead run in the seventh with an RBI ground-out.
The Mets next game against the Nationals is tomorrow night at 8:00 P.M.
