Mets vs. Cardinals Game 3 Recap

New York Mets LHP Steven Matz

The New York Mets lost to the St. Louis Cardinals 5-1 today and lost their series finale, but still managed to take two out of three games. LHP Steven Matz had a difficult outing throwing 95 pitches in 4 innings. Matz gave up three runs on four hits with three walks and four strikeouts. He had a difficult time putting hitters away which resulted in a lot of deep counts and caused his pitch count to go up. His command wasn't nearly as sharp as usual and led to fewer strikeouts. Hopefully he can bounce back from this start and get back on track. Matz has to pitch better and give some stability to the rotation after RHP Noah Syndergarrd and RHP Jacob deGrom. RHP Paul Sewald came in next and allowed one run in two innings, while throwing 55 pitches. RHP Jacob Rhyme followed and pitched a scoreless top of the seventh inning, but gave up a solo homer to SS Paul DeJong in the top of the eighth inning, his second of the game. LHP Jerry Blevins had to come in to get the last out in the top of the eighth inning. RHP A.J. Ramos pitched a scoreless top of the ninth inning.

The Mets offense had several opportunities to score with runners in scoring position with nine baserunners, but weren't able to take advantage and capitalize. SS Amed Rosario drove in the only run of the game with an RBI single in the bottom of the second inning.
