Mets Rout Cardinals 11-4 Led By Pete Alonso

 The New York Mets beat the St. Louis Cardinals 11-4 tonight at Citi Field and improved their record to 25-14.

The offense got off to a fast start in the bottom of the first after CF Brandon Nimmo led off with a walk and RF Mark Canha followed with a single.

Two batters later, 1B Pete Alonso was hit by a pitch to load the bases and then LF Jeff McNeil came up and delivered a two-run single.

The bats did not do much for the next three innings, but came alive in the bottom of the fifth after Canha led off with a walk and then SS Francisco Lindor was hit by a pitch.

Alonso then hit a RBI single and McNeil followed by reaching on an infield single.

3B Eduardo Escobar followed with a sacrifice fly and then DH Dom Smith hit a RBI single.

2B Luis Guillorme then pulled off a well executed sacrifice bunt which scored McNeil and allowed Smith to advance to second.

After scoreless innings in the bottom of the sixth and seventh innings, Guillorme led off the bottom of the eighth with a single and catcher Patrick Mazieka sacrificed him to second.

Nimmo followed with a RBI triple and then Canha hit a RBI single.

Lindor walked and then Alonso came up and broke the game open with a three-run homer.

RHP Max Scherzer allowed two runs (one earned) on seven hits in 5.2 innings. He gave up no walks with four strikeouts and picked up his fifth win.

Scherzer left the game in the top of the sixth with discomfort in his left side.

RHP Adam Ottavino came in next and got the last out in the top of the sixth and stayed in for the top of the seventh and threw a scoreless inning.

RHP Seth Lugo followed and gave up a two-run homer to 3B Nolan Arenado in the top of the eighth.

RHP Colin Holderman closed it out with a scoreless top of the ninth.

The Mets next game is at home against the Cardinals tomorrow afternoon, Thursday May 19th at 1:10 p.m.
