The New York Mets lost to the Philadelphia Phillies 3-2 this afternoon at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia, PA and dropped their record to 19-10.
RHP Max Scherzer got off to a tough start in the bottom of the first after he gave up a solo homer to RF Bryce Harper.
Scherzer had a scoreless bottom of the second inning, but ran into trouble after he gave up singles to LF Kyle Schwarber and 3B Alec Bohm and then a RBI single to Harper, his second RBI of the day.
Scherzer had a scoreless bottom of the third, but his struggles continued in the bottom of the fourth after he gave up a lead-off single to catcher J.T. Realmuto and two batters later, a single to SS Jean Segura and then a single to the following hitter to 1B Jorge Carmago which loaded the bases.
Scherzer then gave up a RBI hitter to the next hitter SS Bryson Stott, but did not allow any more runs in the inning.
He settled down after that with scoreless innings in the bottom of the fifth and sixth and was then taken out.
His final line was 6 innings, 10 hits, 3 runs, 0 walks and 7 strikeouts. Scherzer battled without having his best stuff and kept his team in the game.
LHP Joely Rodriguez followed with a scoreless bottom of the seventh.
RHP Adam Ottavino threw a scoreless bottom of the eighth inning.
The offense was held scoreless for the first five innings against RHP Kyle Gibson, but came alive in the top of the sixth after RF Starling Marte led off with a double and 2B Luis Guillorme followed with a single.
Catcher James McCann then grounded into a double play to bring in a run and then CF Brandon Nimmo singled and SS Francisco Lindor then hit a RBI double
LF Jeff McNeil struck out to end the inning.
The bats did not do much after that and went 1-6 with runners in scoring position and left four runners on base.
The Mets next game is coming up at 4:15 p.m. this afternoon at the Phillies in the second game of doubleheader.
