The New York Mets beat the Atlanta Braves 3-0 tonight at Citi Field to sweep their doubleheader and improved their record to 18-8.

The offense got on the board immediately in the bottom of the first after CF Brandon Nimmo led off with a single and two batters later 2B Jeff McNeil singled.

DH Pete Alonso grounded out, but then 1B Dom Smith came through with a two-run double.

The bats did not do much for the next four innings, but in the bottom of the sixth Alonso delivered with  a solo homer.

RHP Carlos Carrasco worked around a lead-off double by RF Ronald Acuna Jr in the top of the first and singles to 2B Ozzie Albies and CF Adam Duvall to start off the top of the second, but then retired the next three hitters including striking out SS Dansby Swanson and catcher Wilson Contreras.

Carrasco settled down after that and got into a nice groove.

He had pinpoint control of all his pitches including his fastball, change-up, curve-ball and especially his slider.

His slider was particularly effective with a sharp break down in the zone to keep the hitters off- balanced.

He had a rough start last time out against the Cardinals, but other than that he has been outstanding and showed why he is one of the best pitchers in the game when healthy.

His final line was 8 innings, 6 hits, 0 runs, 2 walks and 5 strikeouts.

He picked up his second win and lowered his ERA to 3.30.

RHP Seth Lugo followed and closed it out with a scoreless top of the ninth and picked up his second save.

The Mets next game is tomorrow afternoon at home against the Braves at 1:10 p.m.
