Mets Beat Cardinals 3-1 In First Game Of Doubleheader Behind Trevor Williams and Jake Reed

 The New York Mets beat the St. Louis Cardinals 3-1 this afternoon at Citi Field in the first game of a doubleheader and improved their record to 24-13.

After a scoreless bottom of the first, 1B Dom Smith led off the bottom of the second with a single and 3B Eduardo Escobar followed with a walk.

2B Luis Guillorme then singled to load the bases and RF Travis Jankowski came up and grounded into a fielder's choice to bring in a run.

In the bottom of the third, SS Francisco Lindor led off and reached on an error and then LF Jeff McNeil followed with a RBI double.

Two batters later, 1B Dom Smith drive in McNeil with an RBI double.

RHP Trevor Williams had a stellar performance with four scoreless innings giving up four hits and no walks with six strikeouts.

RHP Jake Reed followed with two scoreless innings in the top of the fifth and sixth. Reed had two walks and two strikeouts. He picked up his first win.

RHP Seth Lugo came in next and threw a scoreless top of the seventh.

RHP Drew Smith followed in the top of the eighth and gave up a solo homer to DH Paul Goldschmidt, but was able to get out of the inning with allowing only one run,

RHP Edwin Diaz came on in the top of the ninth and worked around a two-out single and walk with three strikeouts and picked up his ninth save.

The Mets next game is tonight at home against the Cardinals at 6:40 p.m.
