The New York Mets beat the Atlanta Braves 5-4 this afternoon at Citi Field in the first game of the doubleheader and improved their record to 17-8.

The offense got on the board immediately in the bottom of the first after CF Travis Jankowski led off with an infield hit and two batters later SS Francisco Lindor was hit by a pitch.

1B Pete Alonso followed with an RBI single and 3B Eduardo Escobar also followed with an RBI single.

In the following inning, SS Luis Guillorme led off with a walk and two batters later Jankowski walked.

LF Mark Canha then grounded out into a fielder's choice, but SS Francisco Lindor hit a RBI ground-out and Alonso came through once again with another RBI single.

After a scoreless bottom of the third, catcher Tomas Nido led off the bottom of the fourth with a single and then Jankowski grounded into a fielder's choice, which resulted in Nido getting thrown out at second.

Jankowski then stole second and reached third on a throwing error by catcher Travis d'Arnaud.

Canha than hit a sacrifice fly.

The bats did not much after that and were not able to score for the remainder of the game.

LHP David Peterson cruised through the first four innings allowing one run, but ran into trouble in the top of the fifth after he bobbled a comebacker back to the mound that could have resulted in an inning-ending double play.

Peterson then gave up a three-run homer to the following hitter 1B Matt Olson and a single to 3B Austin Riley, but retired the next two hitters he faced and was taken out after the inning.

His final line was 5 innings, 4 hits, 4 runs, 3 walks and 6 strikeouts.

He picked up his first win.

RHP Adam Ottavino followed with a scoreless top of the sixth.

RHP Drew Smith then threw two scoreless innings in the top of the seventh and eighth innings.

RHP Edwin Diaz closed it out with a scoreless top of the ninth and picked up his fifth save.

The Mets next game is tonight against the Braves at 6:45 p.m.
