The New York Mets lost to the Seattle Mariners 2-1 tonight at Citi Field and dropped their record to 22-12.
RHP Max Scherzer came out firing with three perfect innings, but ran into trouble in the top of the fourth after he hit 1B Ty France and then gave up a single to SS J.P Crawford and a RBI single to LF Jesse Winker.
Scherzer settled down after that with scoreless innings in the top of the fifth and sixth and got out of a based loaded one out jam in the top of the seventh with an inning ending double play and was taken out after the inning.
His final line was 7 innings, 3 hits, 1 run, 2 walks and 6 strikeouts.
RHP Drew Smith followed and ran into trouble in the top of the eighth after he gave up back-to-back walks to start the inning and then a RBI single to France.
Smith recovered to strike out the next two hitters and retired Winker on a pop out to end the inning.
The offense got off to a fast start in the bottom of the first after CF Brandon Nimmo led off with an infield single and then RF Starling Marte followed with a double and SS Francisco Lindor then hit a sacrifice fly.
1B Pete Alonso walked, but then 3B Eduardo Escobar struck out and then LF Mark Canha grounded into a fielder's choice to end the inning.
The bats did not do much after for the next few innings until they had a rally with two outs in the bottom of the seventh after catcher Tomas Nido walked and Nimmo followed with a double, but Marte struck out to end the threat.
They went weakly 1-2-3 in the bottom of the eighth and ninth innings and were 0-5 with runners in scoring position leaving seven runners on base.
The Mets next game is tomorrow night, Saturday May 14th at home against the Mariners at 7:10 p.m.
