The New York Mets beat the St. Louis Cardinals 7-6 this afternoon at Citi Field to take three out of four games in the series and improved their record to 26-14.
The offense got off to a fast start in the bottom of the first after CF Brandon Nimmo led off with a single and then advanced to second after LF Mark Canha grounded out to second.
Nimmo then advanced to third on a wild pitch and SS Francisco Lindor walked.
1B Pete Alonso then came up and hit a RBI single.
Lindor and Alonso then stole second and third on a double steal and LF Jeff McNeil grounded into a fielder's choice to bring home another run.
The bats were held scoreless in the bottom of the second, third, and fourth innings, but came alive in the bottom of the fifth after 2B Luis Guillorme led off with a double and then catcher Tomas Nido hit a sacrifice bunt to move Guillorme to third.
Nimmo then hit a RBI ground-out to tie the game and Canha followed with a single.
Lindor then singled and Alonso walked to load the bases.
LF Jeff McNeil then came up and delivered a two-run double.
The offense did not do much for the next few innings, but in the bottom of the tenth Alonso led off the inning with Lindor on second as the automatic runner and delivered a two-run homer.
RHP Chris Bassitt had a scoreless top of the first, but gave up a solo homer to LF Juan Yepez in the top of the second.
Bassitt gave up another solo homer to DH Paul Goldschmidt in the top of the third.
Bassitt had a scoreless top of the fourth, but in the top of the fifth, he gave up a lead-off double to 2B Tommy Edman and then two batters a RBI double to Goldschmidt.
Bassitt had a scoreless top of the sixth and came back out for the top of the seventh, but walked Edman with one out and then gave up a single to 3B Brendan Donovan and was then taken out.
RHP Drew Smith came in next and got Goldschmidt to fly out to McNeil who also threw out Edman at second to end the inning, but the run was able to score.
Bassitt's final line was 6.1 innings, 9 hits, 4 runs, 1 walk and 3 strikeouts.
RHP Drew Smith followed with 1.2 scoreless innings.
RHP Edwin Diaz came on in the top of the ninth and got into immediate trouble after he gave up an infield hit to CF Harrison Bader, but came back to retire catcher Yadier Moliana on a ground-out and struck out Edman.
Diaz then walked Donovan and almost closed out the game after Goldschmidt grounded out to 3B Eduardo Escobar, but Escobar made a fielding error which allowed Bader to score.
Diaz then walked Arenado to load the bases, but came back to strike out Yepez to keep the game tied.
RHP Colin Holderman came on in the top of the tenth and gave up a single to RF Dylan Carlson, but then recovered to retire 1B Albert Pujois on a double play which brought in a run and then got Bader to ground out to end the inning and keep it a one-run game.
Holerman picked up his first win.
The Mets next game is tomorrow night, Friday May 20th at the Colorado Rockies at 8:40 p.m.
