The New York Mets defeated the Philadelphia Phillies 9-4 tonight and improved their record to 70-80. In the top of the second inning, RF Brandon Nimmo walked, 1B Dominic Smith singled and CF Austin Jackson drove in Nimmo with an RBI double. Catcher Tomas Nido hit a lead-off single in the top of the fifth inning and later scored on an sacrifice fly by SS Amed Rosario. LF Michael Conforto broke the game open in the fifth with a two-run single. In the top of the seventh inning, Rosario singled and stole second and scored on an RBI double by Conforto. In the top of the ninth inning, pinch-hitter Jay Bruce walked and Wilmer Flores singled. 2B Jeff McNeil drove in Bruce with an RBI single and Conforto capped off his big night with a three-run homer for a career-high 6 RBI's on the night. He now has 22 RBI's in his last 16 games.
RHP Zack Wheeler cruised through the first four innings, but ran into trouble in the bottom of the fifth inning. Wheeler gave up a three-run homer to SS J.P Crawford and a sacrifice fly to 2B Cesar Hernandez. He bounced back after that and responded with scoreless innings in the bottom of the sixth and seventh innings. His final line was 7 innings, 3 hits, 4 runs, three walks, and four strikeouts. He picked up his 12th win. RHP Robert Gsellman came in next and threw a scoreless bottom of the eighth inning. LHP Daniel Zamora started the bottom of the ninth inning, but was taken out after he gave up a lead-off single to pinch-hitter Andrew Knapp. RHP Drew Smith had to come in to close it out and get the last three outs.
The Mets next game is tomorrow night at 7:05 P.M. against the Phillies.
