RHP Clay Holmes started out well with three scoreless innings, but then gave up a solo homer to 1B Jonathan Aranda in the top of the fourth.
Holmes had a scoreless top of the fifth and was then taken out after the inning surprisingly with only 79 pitches.
His final line was five innings, three hits, one run, two walks and three strikeouts.
RHP Paul Blackburn came in next in the top of the sixth and got into immediate trouble with three straight singles and after getting a pop-out, gave up a two-run single to LF Jake Mangum and was then taken out.
RHP Max Kranick followed and gave up a RBI ground-out to 3B Junior Caminero and a game-tying RBI single to CF Kameron Misner and a two-run homer to catcher Danny Jansen.
Kranick stayed in for the top of the seventh and threw a scoreless inning.
RHP Justin Garza threw two scoreless innings in the top of the eighth and ninth.
After three scoreless innings, RF Juan Soto reached on an error by RHP Taj Bradley in the bottom of the fourth and then 1B Pete Alonso followed with a RBI double.
2B Jeff McNeil walked to load the bases and DH Starling reached on an infield single which tied the game.
CF Tyrone Taylor then grounded into a fielder's choice which brought home another run.
In the bottom of the fifth, catcher Francisco Alvarez led off with a walk and SS Francisco Lindor followed with a walk.
LF Brandon Nimmo then reached on an error by 1B Jonathan Aranda to load the bases and Soto followed with a based loaded walk.
1B Pete Alonso then struck out and McNeil flew out to left, but Marte came through once again with a two-run single.
Taylor struck out with the bases loaded and two outs to end the threat.
The Met offense was unable to score any more runs wasting scoring opportunities in the bottom of the seventh, eighth and ninth innings.
They went 2-16 with runners in scoring position leaving 12 runners on base.
The Mets next game is tomorrow afternoon, Saturday, June 14 at home against the Rays at 4:10 p.m.
