Mets Lose To Royals In Extra Innings on Walk-Off Balk

 The New York Mets lost to the Kansas City Royals 8-7 tonight in 10 innings at Kaufman Stadium and dropped their record to 50-56.

LHP Jose Quintana started out well with four scoreless innings, but gave up a run in the bottom of the fifth and two in the bottom of the seventh and was taken out.

His final line was 6.2 innings, six hits three runs, two walks and two strikeouts.

RHP Trevor Gott had to come in to get the last out in the bottom of the seventh.

RHP Adam Ottavino came on in the bottom of the eighth and gave up a lead-off walk to RF M,J. Melendez and later in the inning a game-tying single to catcher Freddy Fermin.

RHP Drew Smith threw a scoreless bottom of the ninth.

LHP Brooks Raley came on in the bottom of the tenth and gave up a RBI double to 2B Bobby Witt Jr and then a RBI single to Melendez and was taken out.

RHP Grant Hartwig followed and retired the next two hitters he faced, but was then let down by his defense after 3B Brett Baty made a costly error to keep the inning alive and then walked pinch-hitter Drew Waters to load the bases and was taken out.

LHP Josh Walker came in and balked in the winning run before throwing a pitch.

In the top of the second, 1B Pete Alonso drove in a run with a solo homer for his 31th homer of the year,

In the top of the eighth, Alonso drove in his second run of the game with a RBI single.

Baty then drew a based loaded walk to tie the game and then DH Mark Vientos hit a sacrifice fly.

In the top of the tenth, catcher Francisco Alvarez continued to delivered in his stellar rookie season with a two-run homer, his 21th homer of the year.

The Mets next game is tomorrow night, Wednesday, August 2 at the Royals at 8:10 p.m.
