The New York Mets beat the St. Louis Cardinals 7-1 tonight at Busch Stadium for their third consecutive win and improved their record to 57-66.
The Met offense got on the board immediately in the top of the first after LF Brandon Nimmo led off with a solo homer.
After a scoreless top of the second, SS Francisco Lindor singled with two outs and then 1B Pete Alonso followed with a walk.
RF Jeff McNeil then came through with a RBI single,
The Met bats did not do much for the next four innings, but in the top of the seventh Nimmo led off with a single and then CF Tim Locastro followed with a bunt single.
Alonso then walked to load the bases and Lindor grounded into a fielder's choice which brought home a run.
Catcher Francisco Alvarez then hit a RBI single and McNeil followed and broke the game open with a three-run homer.
LHP Joey Luchessi had a stellar start throwing 5.1 scoreless innings.
Lucchesi gave up four hits and two walks with five strikeouts.
He picked up his second win and lowered his ERA to 3.54.
RHP Phil Bickford came in next and got the last out in the bottom of the sixth,
RHP Sam Coonrod followed and threw a scoreless bottom of the seventh.
RHP Dennis Santana threw a scoreless bottom of the eighth and then in the bottom of the ninth, gave up a RBI double to CF Richie Palacios, but then was able to close out the game.
The Mets next game is tomorrow night, Saturday, August 19 at the Cardinals at 7:15 p.m.
