The New York Mets beat the Philadelphia Phillies 1-0 tonight at Citi Field and improved their record to 74-40.

The offense got on the board early in the bottom of the first after RF Starling Marte singled with one out and then stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error by catcher J.T. Realmuto.

1B Pete Alonso followed with a RBI single.

In the bottom of the second, 3B Luis Guillorme and 2B Jeff McNeil singled with one out, but then catcher Tomas Nido struck out and CF Brandon Nimmo grounded out to end the threat.

The bats did not much after that against ace RHP Aaron Nola who settled into a fine groove retiring 17 hitters in a row at one point and threw a complete game allowing one run on four hits in eight innings.

RHP Jacob deGrom started out well with two strikeouts in the top of the first and later had five consecutive strikeouts and got into a groove of his own retiring 16 consecutive hitters.

DeGrom did not give up his first hit until the top of the sixth on a single by SS Bryson Stott and was taken out after the inning.

His final line was six innings, two hits, 0 runs, 0 walks and 10 strikeouts on 76 pitches (57 strikes).

deGrom was dominant once again with a blazing fastball at 100-102 mph with a nasty slider.

It was his 55th career double-digit strikeout game and he also set a new major league record by allowing two runs or fewer in 22 consecutive home starts.

He picked up his second win and lowered his ERA to 1.62.

RHP Seth Lugo followed with a scoreless top of the seventh.

RHP Trevor May then had a scoreless top of the eighth.

RHP Edwin Diaz came on in the top of the ninth and had his shakiest outing in a long time with two walks due to lack of command on his slider.

However, Diaz still managed to find a way to get out of the jam striking out RF Nick Castellanos to close out the game and pick up his 27th save.

The Mets next game is tomorrow afternoon, Sunday August 14th at home against the Phillies at 1:40 p.m.
