The New York Mets beat the Atlanta Braves 6-2 tonight at Citi Field to sweep doubleheader and improved their record to 69-39.

The offense got on the board in the bottom of the third after catcher Tomas Nido led off with a double and two batters later RF Starling Marte walked.

SS Francisco Lindor then singled and DH Pete Alonso followed with a RBI single.

DH Darin Ruff came up next and grounded into a fielder's choice at 1B, but then SS Dansby Swanson made a throwing error back to 1B which allowed Marte and Lindor to score.

After scoreless innings in the bottom of the fourth and fifth, Alonso led off the bottom of the sixth with an infield hit and then Ruf followed with a single and both Alonso and Ruff were able to advance to second and third after 3B Austin Riley made a throwing error.

Two batters later, LF Mark Canha grounded into a fielder's choice which brought home a run.

In the bottom of the eighth, 3B Eduardo Escobar led off with a double and then LF Tyler Naquin pinch-hit for Canha and hit a RBI single.

Naquin stole second and then 2B Luis Guillorme lined out which allowed Naquin to advance to third.

Catcher Tomas Nido came up next and hit a beautiful bunt on a well-executed suicide squeeze to score Naquin.

RHP Max Scherzer had a spectacular performance with seven scoreless innings allowing four hits and no walks with 11 strikeouts.

He was in complete command all night with a blazing fastball and devastating slider.

Scherzer showed why he is one of the best pitchers in baseball and also made history tonight with his 109th career double digit strikeout game surpassing Pedro Martinez and moves within one game of Roger Clemens with 110.

He picked up his eighth win and lowered his ERA to a remarkable 1.98.

RHP Mychel Givens followed and got into trouble once again allowing a RBI double to RF Ronald Acuna Jr but came back to retire the next two hitters he face to escape further trouble in the inning.

RHP Trevor May gave up a solo homer to catcher Williams Contreras in the top of the ninth, but managed to get the last three outs to close it out.

The Mets next game is tomorrow afternoon, Sunday August 7th at home against the Braves at 4:10 p.m.
