The New York Mets beat the Washington Nationals 9-5 this afternoon at Nationals to take two out of three games in the series and improved their record to 66-38.

After scoreless innings in the top of the first and second, SS Francisco Lindor walked with two outs in the top of the third and then 1B Pete Alonso followed with a two-run homer.

In the top of the fifth, CF Brandon Nimmo led off with a walk and then RF Starling Marte reached on a throwing error by 3B Ildemaro Vargas.

Two batters later, Alonso was intentionally walked to load the bases and then DH Daniel Vogelbach came up and broke the game open with a grand slam.

In the following inning, 3B Luis Guillorme led off with a triple and then catcher Tomas Nido followed with a RBI double.

Nimmo then singled and Marte grounded into a fielder's choice to bring home another run in the inning.

In the top of the ninth, 2B Jeff McNeil off with a double and then LF Mark Canha lined out to right field which allowed McNeil to advance to third.

RHP Chris Bassitt had a stellar outing with seven scoreless innings allowing six hits and four walks with one strikeout.

Bassitt did not have his best stuff, but found a way to work himself out of trouble with men on base.

He picked up his eighth win and lowered his ERA to 3.61.

RHP Trevor May followed with a scoreless bottom of the eighth.

RHP Mychal Givens made his Met debut in the bottom of the ninth and had a rough first outing allowing five runs on five hits and recorded only two outs.

RHP Seth Lugo had to come in to get the last out of the game and was able to close it out.

The Mets next game is tomorrow night, Thursday August 4 back at home at Citi Field to begin their key five-game series against the Atlanta Braves at 7:10 p.m.
