The New York Mets lost to the Philadelphia Phillies 4-1 tonight at Citizens Bank Park in the second game of a doubleheader and dropped their record to 78-44.
LHP David Peterson got off to a tough start in the bottom of the first after he gave up a lead-off double to DH Kyle Schwarber and three batters later a RBI single to catcher J.T. Realmuto.
Peterson ran into more trouble in the bottom of the third after he gave up a single to LF Nick Maton and then walked Schwarber.
Peterson struck out the next hitter 1B Rhys Hoskins, but then gave up a two-run double to 3B Alec Bohm.
Peterson responded after that with a scoreless bottom of the fourth, but had another difficult outing in the bottom of the fifth.
He gave up a lead-off double to Hoskins and three batters later an infield hit to RF Nick Castellanos.
Peterson then walked 2B Jean Segura to load the bases and was then taken out.
His final line was 4.2 innings, eight hits, three runs, two walks and six strikeouts.
RHP Stephen Nogosek came in next and worked out of the based loaded jam striking out CF Matt Vierling.
Nogosek got into another bases loaded jam in the bottom of the sixth, but was helped out by his defense after 2B Jeff McNeil made an incredible leaping catch to end the inning and prevent any runs from scoring.
LHP Rob Zastrynzny made his Met debut in the bottom of the seventh and threw a scoreless inning.
Zastryzny stayed in for the bottom of the eighth and gave up a lead-off hit to Schwarber who was able to advance to third after LF Mark Canha and was taken out.
RHP Mychel Givens came in next and gave up a RBI single to Hoskins.
In the top of the first, RF Starling Marte was hit by a pitch with one out, but was then thrown out trying to steal second.
SS Francisco Lindor singled with two outs and then DH Pete Alonso and 1B Darin Ruf walked to load the bases.
Lindor then scored on a wild pitch.
In the top of the fifth, Canha led off with a single and three batters later, CF Brandon Nimmo was hit by a pitch.
Marte then came up and struck out to end the threat.
In the top of the ninth, McNeil doubled with two outs and then Canha walked to bring the tying run to the plate.
3B Brett Baty came up next with a chance to tie the game, but grounded out to third for the last out of the game.
The offense did not much at night managing only three hits leaving seven runners on base and going 0-7 with runners in scoring positon,
The Mets game is tomorrow afternoon, Sunday August 21 at the Phillies at 1:35 p.m.
