Mets Announce Mays Number Retirement At Old Timers Day

The New York Mets had their first Old Timers' Day since 1994 today at Citi Field and honored many former players from all generations.

At the end of the ceremony in a surprise team, they announced they would be retiring Hall of Famer CF Willie Mays' number 24.

Mets played for the Mets in the final two years of his career from 1972-1973 and helped them make it to the World Series in 1973.

Original Mets owner Joan Payson had made a promise that Mays' number would be retired after he career, but sadly she died in 1975 before she was able to make good on her promise.

He is one of the greatest baseball players of all time and made 24 All-Star games over the course of his career and also won 12 Gold Gloves.

Mays hit 660 homers in his career with a lifetime .301 batting average over 23 seasons.

He began his Major League career with the New York Giants and played there from 1951-1957 until the Giants moved to San Francisco in 1958.
