The offense did not do much for the first eight innings,
but finally came alive in the top of the ninth after 3B Eduardo Escobar singled
with one out and then two batters later, LF Mark Canha reached on a throwing error
by sure handed 3B Nolan Arenado after he threw it over first baseman Paul Goldschmidt’s
head, which allowed Escobar to score.
LF Jeff McNeil came up next and doubled which moved pinch-runner
Travis Jankowski to third base.
Pinch-hitter Dom Smith then came up and hit a hard ground-ball
to Goldschmidt at first, and was hustling down the line and dove into the first
base bag to beat Goldschmidt which allowed two runs to score.
CF Brandon Nimmo followed with a two-run homer to
helped increase the lead to 5-2.
RHP Max Scherzer had a dominant outing with seven
scoreless innings allowing only two hits with one walk and 10 strikeouts. He
lowered his ERA to 1.80.
Scherzer was in complete command of all of his pitches
and kept his team in the game without any run support.
RHP Trevor May followed in the bottom of the eighth and
got into immediate trouble allowing back-to-back singles to start the inning to
catcher Yadier Molina and CF Harrison Bader and two batters later walked Goldschmidt
to load the bases.
May then gave up a two-run single to LF Tyler O’Neil,
but was able to retire the next two hitters he faced and limit any further damage.
RHP Edwin Diaz came on in the bottom of the ninth and retired
the first two hitters he faced and then walked catcher Andrew Knizer, but came
back to strike out Bader to close it out and picked up his second save.
The Mets next game is tomorrow night, Tuesday April 26th
at 7:45 p.m.
