The offense was held scoreless for the first four innings against RHP Joan Adon, but came alive in the top of the fifth after catcher James McCann lead off with a single and then CF Brandon Nimmo and SS Francisco Lindor followed with walks to load the bases. 1B Pete Alonso came up and broke the game open with his first career grand slam. The bats went quiet for the next few innings until the top of the ninth after Nimmo led off the inning with a double and then RF Starling Marte flied out to right which moved Nimmo to third. Nimmo later scored on a wild pitch by relievr RHP Andres Machado. RHP Chris Bassitt met his Met debut after coming over from the Oakland Athletics in a trade and had a stellar start with six scoreless innings. Bassitt allowed three hits with one walk and eight strikeouts. He was in complete command all night and featured all of his pitches including his fastball, change-up, curveball and sharp breaking slider. Bassitt attacked the strike zone and kept pouring in strikes. He will be fun to watch as this season progresses. RHP Drew Smith followed with a scoreless bottom of the seventh. LHP Joely Rodriguez threw a scoreless bottom of the eighth. RHP Adam Ottavino closed it out with a scoreless bottom of the ninth. The Mets next game is tomorrow afternoon at the Nationals at 1:35 p.m.
