The New York Mets beat the Washington Nationals 5-1 tonight on Opening Day at Nationals Park in Washington, D.C. The offense was held scoreless for the first four innings against LHP Patrick Corbin, but came alive in the top of the fifth. 2B Robinson Cano led off the inning with a bunt single and CF Mark Canha followed with a walk. LF Jeff McNeil then singled to load the bases and then catcher James McCann was hit by a pitch which brought in a run. RF Starling Marte then grounded into a fielder's choice which brought home a run.
In the following inning, 1B Pete Alonso singled with one out and two batters later Cano walked. Canha and McNeil then followed with RBI singles.
After a scoreless top of the sixth, DH J.D. Davis hit a lead-off double in the top of the seventh and SS Franciso Lindor followed with a RBI single.
RHP Tylor Megill had a stellar outing in his debut start of his second year with five scoreless innings, three hits, no walks and six strikeouts. Megill was in complete command all night particularly with his change-up and slider. He also had a lot of life of fastball dialing it up to 98 mph. Megill showed off his composure and poise especially in the third inning when he struck out star RF Juan Soto with a runner on third and one out and then got DH Nelson Cruz to ground out to end the inning. He has a bright future with his stuff and composure and it will be fun to see if he can build off this excellent outing going forward.
RHP Trevor May followed and gave up a run in the bottom of the sixth on a solo homer by Soto.
RHP Adam Ottavo then threw a scoreless bottom of the seventh.
RHP Seth Lugo threw a scoreless bottom of the eighth.
RHP Edwin Diaz closed it out with a scorless bottom of the ninth.
The Mets next game is at the Nationals tomorrow night April 8 at 7:05 p.m.
