The New York Mets lost to the Philadelphia Phillies 5-4 tonight in Philadelphia for their second consecutive loss and dropped their record to 3-2.
The offense got off to a fast start in the top of the first after CF Brandon Nimmo and RF Starling Marte hit singles. Nimmo and Marte advanced to second and third on a throwing error by 3B Alec Bohm. Two batters later 1B Pete Alonso drove in the first run of the game with a RBI ground-out and 3B Eduardo Escobar followed with a RBI single. DH J.D. Davis then walked and LF Mark Canha hit a RBI single.
The bats went quiet for the next five innings until the top of the seventh after catcher James McCann led off with a walk and three batters later SS Francisco Lindor hit a RBI single.
The offense wasted several scoring opportunities once again and went 3-12 with runners in scoring position and left six men on base.
RHP Taijaun Walker cruised through the first two innings with four strikeouts, but then came after the bottom of the second with shoulder irritation.
LHP David Peterson followed in relief and did a stellar job with four scoreless innings.
RHP Trevor May came in next and threw a scoreless bottom of the seventh, and came back out for the bottom of the eighth. May gave up a lead-off walk to 3B Alec Bohm and was taken out due to arm fatique.
LHP Joely Rodriguez came in next and got into immediate trouble after he gave up a single to pinch-hitter Johan Camago and later in the inning a two-run homer to catcher J.T. Realmuto and was then taken out.
RHP Seth Lugo followed and walked DH Nick Castellanos and a double to 1B Rhys Hoskins which tied the game.
Lugo then gave up a RBI double to SS Didi Gregarious to give the Phillies a 5-4 lead before striking out SS Didi Gregarious to end the inning.
The Mets next game is tomorrow night at the Phillies at 6:45 p.m.
