The New York Mets beat the San Francisco Giants 3-1 tonight at Citi Field to sweep their day-night doubleheader and improved their record to 9-3.
The offense was held scoreless for the first two innings, but in the bottom of the third, SS Francisco Lindor doubled with one out and then advanced to third on a wild pitch by RHP Ryan Webb. 1B Pete Alonso walked and then 1B Eduardo Escobar hit a two-run double. 1B Dom Smith followed with a RBI single.
RHP Max Scherzer was stellar from the start and cruised through the first five innings allowing only one walk and no hits. Scherzer started out well in the top of the sixth with back-to-back strikeouts, but then ran into trouble after he walked RF Mike Yastremski and 1B Brandon Bell. Scherzer then gave up a RBI single to DH Darin Ruff, but was able to get out of the inning.
Scherzer stayed in for the top of the seventh and had a 1-2-3 inning and was then taken out.
His final line was 7 innings, 1 hit, 1 run, 3 walks and 10 strikeouts. He picked up his third win and lowered his ERA to 2.50. Scherzer was in complete control all night and had pinpoint command with his fastball, curveball, slider and change-up. He hung in there in the top of the sixth when it looked like he was tiring. Scherzer showed why he is one of the best pitchers in the game and a first-ballot Hall of Famer.
RHP Drew Smith came in next and threw a scoreless top of the eighth.
RHP Trevor May closed it out with a 1-2-3 top of the ninth and picked up his first save.
The Mets next game is tomorrow night at home against the Giants at 7:10 p.m.
