The New York Mets lost to the Washington Nationals 4-2 this afternoon in Washington D.C, but still won three out of four games in their first series of the year. RHP Carlos Carrasco got off to a tough start in the bottom of the first after he gave up a solo homer to DH Nelson Cruz, but settled down after that. Carrasco settled into a nice groove and retired the last 15 hitters he faced. He had sharp command of his change-up and curveball. His final line was 5.2 innings, 2 hits, 1 run, 0 walks and 5 strikeouts. If Carrasco is able to build off this start and pitch like he has shown in the past when healthy, it bodes well for him and makes this rotation that much better. LHP Chasen Shreve came in next and retired RF Juan Soto to end the inning. Shreve stayed in for the bottom of the seventh and threw a scoreless inning. He remained in the game for the bottom of the eighth he gave up a single to LF Yadiel Hernandez and was then taken out. RHP Trevor Williams came in next and gave up a single to 3B Maikel Franco and then gave up a sacrifice bunt to SS Lucius Fox which allowed the run to score. Later in the inning, 1B Pete Alonso made a key throwing eror on a grounder by 2B Cesar Hernandez after making another throwing error earlier in the inning. Williams then gave up a two-run single to Cruz.
The offense were held scoreless for the first three innings until the top of the fourth after SS Francisco Lindor led off the inning with a solo homer. Three baters later, 3B Eduardo Escobar doubled and DH Dom Smith walked. RF Mark Canha continued his hot start with a RBI single.
The bats didn't do much after that and wasted several scoring opportunities. They were 1-8 with runners in scoring positon and left six men on base.
The Mets next game is tomorrow night Monday April 11 in Philadelphia against the Phillies at 6:45 p.m.
