The New York Mets lost to the San Francisco Giants 5-2 tonight at Citi Field to snap their three-game winning streak and dropped their record to 9-4. RHP Chris Bassitt got into immediate trouble in the top of the first after he gave up a lead-off single to RF Mike Yastrzemski and two batters later 1B Darren Ruf. Bassitt then gave up a RBI double to LF Joc Pederson and RBI singles to SS Brandon Crawford and former Met 3B Wilmer Flores.
Bassitt's struggles continued in the top of the second after he gave up a solo homer to DH Brandon Belt.
After a scoreless top of the third, Bassitt gave up a lead-off single to CF Steven Duggar in the top of the fourth and then later in the inning, a RBI single to Yastrzemski.
Bassitt settled down after that and didn't allow any more runs after that and was able to stay in for another two innings.
His final line was 6 innings, 8 hits, 5 runs, 1 walk and 6 strikeouts.
LHP Chasen Shreve came in next and threw a scoreless top of the seventh.
RHP Sean Reid-Foley threw two scoreless innings in the top of the eighth and ninth innings.
The offense was held scoreless for the first six innings, but finally broke through in the bottom of the seventh after 2B Luis Guillorme singled with one out and two batters later CF Brandon Nimmo singled. RF Starling Marte came up next and drove in the first run of the game with a RBI single, but was inexplicably thrown out to end the inning after he tried to steal second base with SS Francisco Lindor up at the plate and Nimmo on third.
In the bottom of the eighth, 1B Pete Alonso and 3B Eduardo Escobar singled with one out and then LF Mark Canha hit a RBI single. 2B Robinson Cano came up next and hit a ground-out and then pinch-hitter Dom Smith came up and lined out to Flores to end the inning.
In the bottom of the ninth, catcher James McCann led off with a walk, but wasn't able to advance any further after Nimmo struck out, Marte grounded into a fielder's choice which caused McCann to be thrown out at second and Lindor struck out to end the game.
The bats were not able to come up with a timely hit with runners on and went 2-8 with runners in scoring position and left 10 men on base.
The Mets next game is tomorrow afternoon against the Giants at 1:10 p.m.
