The New York Mets lost to the Boston Red Sox 6-3 tonight at Fenway Park and dropped their record to 73-78.
RHP Marcus Stroman started out well with three scoreless innings including working out of a based loaded jam in the bottom of the third, but ran into trouble in the bottom of the fourth.
Stroman gave up back-to-back doubles to 1B Bobby Dalbec and catcher Christian Vazquez to bring in a run.
In the following inning, Stroman gave up a lead-off homer to CF Kike Hernandez and then later a RBI to DH Kyle Schwarber and a two-run homer to SS Xander Bogaerts and was taken out after the inning.
His final line was 5 innings, 7 hits, 4 runs, 2 walks and 3 strikeouts.
RHP Miguel Castro followed in the bottom of the sixth and retired the first two hitters he faced, but then hit 2B Jose Islesias and then walked Hernandez and was taken out.
LHP Brad Hand came in next and gave up a two-run single to Boegarts before getting out of the inning.
RHP Heath Hembree followed and threw two scoreless innings in the bottom of the seventh and eighth innings.
The offense was held scoreless for the first three innings, but in the top of the fourth SS Francisco Lindor walked and then 2B Javy Baez followed with a single and then 1B Pete Alonso walked to loade the bases.
3B J.D. Davis followed with a walk to bring in a run and then RF Michael Conforto singled to bring in another run, but Alonso was thrown out at home on a controversial send by third base coach Gary DiSarcina to prevent another run and prevented a potential inning of several more runs.
In the top of the fifth, CF Brandon Nimmo singled with one out and then Lindor followed with a double, but Baez struck out and Alonso grounded out to end the inning.
The bats didn't do much after that outside of Alonso added a solo homer in the top of the eighth, his 34th homer of the year.
The Mets next game is tomorrow night Wednesday September 23th at the Red Sox at 7:10 p.m.
