The New York Mets beat the Miami Marlins 2-1 tonight in an extra-inning game that went nine innings at Citi Field to sweep their doubleheader and improved their record to 75-82.
RHP Noah Syndergarrd made his first start since September 29, 2019 after missing the last two seasons from Tommy John Surgery 18 months ago.
Syndergarrd had a 1-2-3 top of the first striking out the first two hitters he faced topping out at 96 mph and retiring CF Bryan De La Cruz on a ground-out to end the inning and was then taken out.
RHP Trevor Williams followed and gave up a solo homer to RF Jesus Sanchez in the top of the second.
Williams settled in after that and allowed one run on five hits with no walks and six strikeouts in four innings.
RHP Miguel Castro followed with a scorless top of the sixth.
RHP Trevor May threw a scoreless top of the seventh.
RHP Jeurys Familia then threw a scoreless top of the eighth.
LHP Brad Hand threw a scoreless top of the ninth and picked up his sixth win.
The offense was held scoreless for the first four innings until the bottom of the fifth after 3B Jonathan Villar doubled with one out and then RF Kevin Pillar followed with a RBI single.
The bats didn't do much for the next few innings until the bottom of the ninth after 1B Pete Alonso grounded out which moved 2B Javy Baez to third base who was the automatic runner to start the inning.
Catcher James McCann then grounded into a fielder's choice to RHP Anthony Bass who couldn't make a clean throw which allowed Baez to score winning run.
The Mets next game is tomorrow night at home against the Marlins at 7:10 p.m.
