Mets Lose To Cardinals 11-4 After Tylor Megill Struggles In First Inning

The New York Mets lost to the St. Louis Cardinals 11-4 tonight at Citi Field to get swept in their three-game series and dropped their record to 72-75.
RHP Tylor Megill got off to a rough start in the top of the first after he gave up a lead-off walk to 3B Tommy Edman and then back-to-back doubles to 1B Paul Goldschmidt and then a two-run double to LF Tyler O'Neill.
Megill then walked 3B Nolan Arenado and two batters later gave up a RBI single to LF Dylan Carlson and then later in the inning a two-run single to CF Harrison Bader.
Megill was able to get out of the inning and then had a scoreless inning in the top of the second.
He gave up a solo homer to Bader in the top of the third and was taken out after the inning.
His final line was 3 innings, 9 hits, 6 runs, 2 walks and 3 strikeouts.
RHP Migeul Castro followed with two scoreless innings in the top of the fourth and fifth innings.
LHP Brad Hand then threw a scoreless top of the sixth.
RHP Seth Lugo came in the top of the seventh and gave up solo homers to Goldschmidt and Arenado.
RHP Heath Hembree came in next in the top of the eighth and had a difficult outing allowing three runs on a solo homer by SS Edmundo Sosa and then RBI singles to Goldschmidt and Arenado.
RHP Jake Reed had to come in to get the last out in the top of the eighth.
RHP Trevor May then came in and threw a scoreless top of the ninth.
After a scoreless bottom of the first, 1B Pete Alonso hit a solo homer in the bottom of the second.
In the following inning, LF Jeff McNeil led off with a double and later in the inning scored on a double.
The bats went quiet for the next few innings until the bottom of the sixth after CF Kevin Pillar hit a solo homer.
In the bottom of the seventh, McNeil led off with a single and then pinch-hitter Jose Peraza followed with a RBI single.
The Mets are off tomorrow and return to action on Friday, September at home against the Philadelphia Phillies at 7:10 p.m.
