The New York Mets lost to the New York Yankees 8-7 tonight at Citi Field and dropped their record to 71-72.
Prior to the game there was an emotional ceremony to all those who lose their lives during the 9/11 terrorist attacks including firefighers, police officers and first reponders.
RHP Taijuan Walker got off to a tough start in the second inning after he gave up a two-run homer to catcher Kyle Higashioka, another two-run homer to CF Brett Gardner and a solo homer to RF Aaron Judge.
Walker settled down after that and retird the last 13 hitters he faced.
His final line was 6 innings, 6 hits, 5 runs, 1 walk and 8 strikeouts.
RHP Seth Lugo followed with a scoreless top of the seventh.
RHP Trevor May came in the top of the eighth and got into immediate trouble after he gave up a lead-off single to Gardner and then a two-run homer to Judge.
May then gave up a single to LF Giancarlo Stanton and was then taken out.
LHP Aaron Loup came on and after retiring 1B Anthony Rizzo on a fly-out, gave up an infield hit to SS Gleyber Torres, and then pinch-hiiter Luke Volt hit a ground-ball that 2B Javier Baez threw away which allowed the go-ahead run to score.
LHP Brad Hand threw a scoreless top of the ninth.
After a scoreless bottom of the first, Baez led off the bottom of the second with a walk and two batter later CF Kevin Pillar hit a RBI double. Catcher James McCann followed with a RBI triple and Walker helped his own cause with a RBI single.
In the following inning, Baez led off with a solo homer.
In the bottom of the sixth, LF Jeff McNeil led off with a walk and two batters later McCann hit a two-run homer.
In the following inning, Baez and McNeil singled with two outs and then Pillae came through with a RBI single.
The Mets next game is tomorrow night at home against the Yankees at 8:00 p.m.
