The New York Mets lost to the St. Louis Cardinals 7-0 tonight at Citi Field and dropped their record to 72-73.
LHP Rich Hill had a scoreless top of the first, but in the top of the second, he gave up a lead-off double to catcher Yadier Moliana and then a RBI double to the following hitter RF Dylan Carlson.
Hill's trouble continued in the top of the third inning after he gave up another lead-off double to third baseman Tommy Edman and then a RBI double to the following hitter 1B Paul Goldschmidt.
Hill had a scoreless top of the fourth, but then gave up a solo homer to Goldscmidt in the top of the fifth and was then taken out.
His final line was 5 innings, 6 hits, 3 runs, 2 walks and 4 stikeouts.
RHP Heath Hembree followed with a scoreless top of the sixth.
RHP Migeul Castro then threw a scoreless top of the seventh.
RHP Yennsy Diaz threw a scoreless top of the eighth.
Diaz stayed in for the top of the ninth and walked Goldschmidt with one out and then gave up a RBI single to LF Tyler O'Neill.
Later in the inning, Diaz gave up a two-run single to SS Edmundo Sosa and was then taken out.
RHP Trevor Williams had to come in and gave up a RBI single to CF Harrison Bader, but was able to finish out the inning.
The offense struggled all night against RHP Adam Wainright and wasted several opportunities including having the based loaded with two outs in the bottom of the first, but then LF Jeff McNeil struck out to end the inning.
They were 0-7 with runners in scoring position and left nine men on base.
The Mets next game is at home tomorrow night against the Cardinals at 7:10 p.m.
