Mets Lose To Nationals 4-3 After Edwin Diaz Blows Save In Ninth

Mets RHP Edwin Diaz (Photo Credits to Greg Fuime-Getty Images) The New York Mets lost to the Washigton Nationals 4-3 this afternoon in Washington D.C to win three out of five games in the series and dropped their back to .500 at 69-69. RHP Trevor Williams had a difficult outing allowing two runs on 10 hits in five innings. Williams gave two walks with three walks. RHP Jeurys Familia followed with a scoreless bottom of the sixth. LHP Brad Hand then threw a scoreless bottom of the seventh. RHP Seth Lugo threw a scoreless bottom of the eighth. RHP Edwin Diaz came on in the bottom of the ninth and got into immediate trouble after he gave up a lead-off walk to SS Alcides Escobar and then two batters later walked 1B Josh Bell. Diaz then gave up a game-tying RBI single to pinch-hitter Andrew Steveson and then a RBI walk-off single to 3B Carter Kieboom. This was Diaz's fifth loss and sixth blown save. In the top of the first, SS Francisco Lindor doubled with one out and two batters later 1B Pete Alonso hit a RBI single. After a scoreless next two innings, 2B Javier Baez and CF Kevin Pillar singled to start off the top of the fourth inning and Baez advanced to third. LF Jeff McNeil then grounded into a double play to score Baez. Alonso hit a solo homer to lead off the top of the sixth. The offense struggled all day with men on base and was 1-10 with runners in scoring position and left eight runners on base. The Mets next game is tomorrow night at the Miami Marlins at 6:40 p.m.
