Mets Rally To Beat Blue Jays 5-4 After Jeff McNeil Delivers a Pinch-Hit Double

Mets 2B Jeff McNeil (Photo Credits to Wendell Cruz-USA Today Sports) The New York Mets beat the Toronto Blue Jays 5-4 this afternoon at Citi Field to take two out of three games in the series and improved their record to 52-44. After a scoreless bottom of the first inning, 3B J.D. Davis doubled to lead off the bottom of the second and SS Jonathan Villar followed with a RBI single. The offense was quiet for the next few innings for the next few innings until the bottom of the sixth after RF Michael Conforto walked with one out and then 1B Pete Alonso followed with a two-run homer to tie the game for his 22th homer of the year and fith since the All-Star game. Two batters later, Davis walked against former Met Jacob Barnes, Villar singled and pinch-hitter Jeff McNeil came through with a RBI double. LHP Rich Hill made his Met debut and started out well with five scoreless innings. Hill ran into trouble in the top of the sixth facing the Blue Jays third time throigh the order after he hit CF George Springer, gave up a double to 1B Vladimir Guerrero Jr, and then walked 2B Marcus Semien to load the bases and was then taken out. RHP Seth Lugo came on and gave up a two-run single to SS Bo Bichette and then was able to get LF Tesocar Hernandez to ground out to Davis, but Davis made a poor throw trying to get Semien at home for the third run of the inning. Lugo didn't gave up any more runs in the inning, but all of the runs were charged to Hill since he left with the based loaded. Hill's final line was 5 innings, 5 hits, 3 runs, 2 walks and 1 strikeouts. RHP Jeurys Familia followed with a scoreless top of the seventh inning. RHP Trevor May came on in the top of the eighth and ran into trouble after he gave up three consecutive hits to Semien, Bichette and Hernandez. May was able to retire RF Randal Grichuk on a fly-out and then walked pinch-hitter Lourdes Gurriel Jr to load the bases with two outs. May got catcher Aledandro Kirk to pop out for the second out. LHP Aaron Loup had to come in and retired 3B Cavan Biggio on a line-out to LF Dom Smith to end the inning. RHP Edwin Diaz came on in the top of the ninth and struck out Springer to lead off the inning and then walked Guerrero Jr, but came back to strike out Semien and Bichette to close it out for his 21th save of the year. The Mets next game is tomorrow afternoon at home for a doubleheader against the Braves beginning at 5:10 p.m.
